"LOL"

I'm not using this term any more. I think it has completely lost its meaning.

"lol" is supposed to mean "laugh out loud." The irony of this is that I highly doubt anyone laughs out loud when they type these three letters. If anything, it sounds a bit platitudinous when I read it at times because it is so overused. Unless you put an exclamation mark at the end of it, I register this phrase as "I find what you said slightly amusing... I guess" or "I really wasn't paying attention to what you just said."

This is not targeted at anyone in particular. And you are free to use this when talking to me, void of judgement. But, I'm going to stop reproducing little "lol" babies on the internet. Pest control, really.

I myself overuse the smiley face emoticon. But, I like it. And I won't stop using it. :)

If I myself ever use the term "lol" please call me out on it. "haha!" is what I'll be using when I find something funny.

I hope the "lol" abbreviation disappears... one can only hope.

End rant o' the day.

  1. LOL!!!!! :P

Hehe I did laugh out loud by the way ;) I think "lol" is just ingrained in forums now. I've had quite a few real life situations where it would have been perfect, but I can't really imagine saying it out loud! I'm guilty of overusing it too, as am I for smileys ;) Maybe I'll try to cut back on the lols, but don't touch my smileys!

  2. nooooooo u broke my heart, I LOVE to use lol :(
But i think lol is rude when it constituates a sentence, like in a text message (its like dude use your imagination a little!!)

on the other hand, i use lol when bwahahahah (my favorite) is too strong or seems inappropriate.

but 4 real,do you see an alternative for lol? I was thinking hihihi or hehehe perhaps?

  4. Funny you talk about hihihi Boa.. I've had English friends ask me what that meant because they thought it said 'hi' repeatedly! I like hihihi or hahaha, but love bwahahah too ;)

Cerena, tu devrais écrire un post en français une fois!

  6. Thank you for the comments, Michelle and Boa :)

    Alternatives:

"hahaX," where X represents the remaining amount of "ha's" that should be directly proportional to funniness.

"hehe" when something is funny cute

"bahaX" similar to "haha" except this applies to things that are so funny you're almost cackling

Those are just my alternatives, everyone is free to use "lol" these are just my thoughts on it :)

I'll give you some examples of using "lol" in an inappropriate manner. Where it can sounds overused and just pointless.

Ex. 1... I went to the store today. lol.

    Ex. 2...
Person A: I just went to the store.
    (10 minutes later)
    Person B: lol

P.S. Michelle, I will write a post in French! In the NEAR future!

  7. I find that I often chuckle or giggle outloud, but it's rarely enough to actually call 'laugh.' I make sure to specify by saying "that made me giggle for real!" The way I see, if someone was clever or funny enough to amuse me that much, they deserve a full sentence :) .
Of course, if I'm lazy, I tend to go with 'HAHAH!' or, if it's not THAT intense, just 'hahaha'

By the by, I didn't realize till now, but I never read 'lol' as a laughing out loud... I tend to read it as an amused smile. I only think people are actually laughing if they type 'hahaha' or 'hehehe' (again, just 'haha' I read as an amused smile. hm.)

    Today's topic was deep, C!

This got an amused smile out of me:

"Of course, if I'm lazy, I tend to go with 'HAHAH!' or, if it's not THAT intense, just 'hahaha'"

    Person B: lol''

BWAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA (that made me giggle for real)!!! those examples are too funny! Im actually laughing out loud in my research lab XD

but jokes aside, it IS rude when ppl use lol for I dont care !

    boa

ps: suggestion for next ''deep''topic --ppl that use ''K'' as a sentence...(soo annoying and rude!)

Why, aren't you laughing out loud at these sentences?? :P
